Basil knew from an early age that music was going to be his life. Inspired by his DJ father, he learnt his trade from him whilst helping carry record boxes & large speakers between gigs every weekend. Basil began to DJ at the age of 16 and soon after he also took up dancing.
This gave him an early opportunity to perform all over the world – firstly with a South African dance troupe called Uthingo and then as a featured dancer in pop promos for acts including Spandau Ballet & Lisa Stansfield. It was while he was dancing with Uthingo that Basil was introduced to the exciting and varied sounds of live percussion and he learnt to play a whole range of percussive instruments during this period.
Basil then began playing percussion for live jam sessions with other musicians around London and this led him to be spotted and asked to tour with acts such as Desiree, Joyce Sims and Basement Jaxx. However Basil’s final step to combine DJ’ing and live percussion came about almost by accident! Having been booked to DJ at a gig involving a live band, the band were delayed so Basil, keen to give the audience a live performance, began to play percussion over the top of his DJ tracks. The crowd went wild and the rest is history….
